I have been a senior leader in Higher Education for ten years, and have risen through the ranks, as it were, with roles as Head of Department, Head of School, Head of College and up to Pro-Vice Chancellor. In all that time I have benefitted from the support and advice of many colleagues, mentors and my coach. It would have been very difficult to do the job, deal with the stresses, understand new and complex situations and make impossible decisions without this wider support.
I see it as part of my role within the Consultancy to offer help and support to others in a similar position, and particularly to those in the early stages of their leadership journey. I am always happy to listen, to share my experience and to offer advice on an ad hoc basis (without charge) or to offer more extended support through mentoring or coaching (for a nominal fee).
Over the years I have provided support to colleagues and made a particular point of identifying younger and more junior academics, or members of professional services, giving them the opportunity to take on leadership roles and supporting them in those roles.
I have gained a reputation as a colleague who can listen, as a rare person in senior leadership who takes other colleagues seriously as people, and who wants to develop each individual to give of their best, drawing on their own creativity and enabling them to implement their own ideas and bring others with them.
