I have worked in Higher Education for thirty years (1993-2023) at the University of Birmingham and Swansea University. I have held senior leadership positions for over ten years: Pro-Vice Chancellor and Head of College (2009-2010) and Deputy to the Provost (2011-2015) in Birmingham, Pro-Vice Chancellor Education (2015-2022) in Swansea.

I have considerable experience in dealing with complex and sensitive staffing issues, in leadership development and in instilling a values based approach across the university.

  • Strategy: I have extensive experience of developing, implementing and evaluating strategies for many different areas of the university.
  • Training: I am an experienced educator and have led training and discussion days with academics, professional services and student union colleagues.
  • Research: I am an expert in ethnographic methods, trained in cultural anthropology, with considerable experience of investigations, consultations and paper-based research.
  • Integrity: With a background in religion, theology and ethics I have a detailed understanding of the needs and application of integrity in the university.
  • Value: Having managed budgets, implemented savings and been engaged in planning rounds I have an in depth understand of the financial underpinnings of higher education.
  • Evaluation: I have undertaken formal audits and evaluations of processes and policies, including external evaluations of other institutions.

I can offer specialist support in the following areas:

I am fully trained as a Professional Workplace Investigator. I have many years experience in this field, working on a series of complex cases as investigator, chair of grievance and disciplinary panels and in appeals.

I have extensive experience of restructuring academic and professional service departments. Successful restructuring demands clear strategies, planning, communications and liaison with staff and students, including HR consultations, union engagement and public relations.

I am available to offer leadership support and mentoring to new and aspiring leaders. I can also offer coaching to those who are facing particular issues and difficult scenarios.

What does it mean to be a ‘values based’ university? How do you evaluate where you currently stand? How do you develop the value proposition and embed it across the university? I can offer facilitation for discussions, training and support for consultations.

My academic work has focused on religious diversity and religious literacy and I am very happy to advise institutions on issues relating to religion, free speech, chaplaincy or student societies.
